Hooray, booze!

I was going to post this in the comments section, but it got too long. In answer to your question, at first, I just wanted to learn how to drink bourbon straight.
I always wondered if the experts that like to go on about bouquet, 'the nose', the finish, etc were serious or just BS'ing. After a couple of weeks, I can finally tell the difference between several different kinds. I tried 1776 first, drinking a glass every evening, but couldn't appreciate it because it tasted like rubbing alcohol. Then I tried Rebel Yell, which also tasted like antiseptic but it was cheap, so who cares.

As I got used to it, I started to notice the flavor, the texture, and even appreciate the burn. I've also tried Fighting Cock, Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, and noticed I gravitate more towards the rye whiskeys. This made me think that I would like scotch since it's not supposed to be as sweet as bourbon. I DO like it, ...and now I'm thinking I'll just work my way through all the whiskeys, American, Scottish, Irish and Canadian.

Johnny Walker Black label is better! I've never had the money to try the gold or blue labels. We like McCollaugh (might be spelled wrong) Speyside and Highlands. I prefer the blended to the single malts although Glenfiddich is tasty if you can get past the $30+ price tag.

I've only tried Bushmills of the Irish whiskeys. I don't like the Canadian stuff I've tried. I like Maker's Mark and Wild Turkey, but am not crazy about the Wild Turkey Rye.

My favorite is still Vodka. Stoli is my favorite with Blue Ice a very close second. I'll drink Finlandia in a pinch (that is what air lines seem to have) and Absolute if I'm desperate. I don't do Grey Goose because they are French...I'd like to try some of the pricier imports but can't bring my self to pay $40+ for booze when I can get Stoli for half. Didn't know I had so many opinions, did ya?

You just got cooler on the Sister-o-matic-Coolness-Scale-inator. I can't tell the difference between ANY burbons or whiskies or whiskys. I do know why they are spelled differently, but that's it. And I only drink Johnny straight when I'm depressed. So hats off to you, you accomplished and sophisticated conisseur, you! You are so freakin' awesome....I bet none of the othe homeschoolers have sisters that can tell the difference between burbons......

I see, thanks for the information. Sounds like a fun thing to try..I've never gotten into drinking any of it straight up. My boss toured the distillery for Maker's Mark and noted the vats are not covered and the plant is full of birds...you can imagine. Alcohol purifies the doo doo I suppose. We make some pretty good white lightening at work, 200 proof. The 160 we made in the lab was pretty good..after that yikes.
Cheers!
